Sabarimala Virtual Q Explained

Every pilgrim to the Sabarimala Sannidhanam needs a Virtual Q slot. This guide explains what the Virtual Q is, the documents to keep ready, how to create your profile and book your slot, and what happens if you don't get one.

Disclaimer: This guide is for general information only. Booking rules, daily limits and procedures can change from season to season, and sometimes mid-season. Before you travel, please check the official website, sabarimalaonline.org, for the latest instructions.

What is the Sabarimala Virtual Q?

The Sabarimala Virtual Q is an online reservation and crowd-management system run by the Kerala Police and the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) for pilgrims visiting the Sabarimala Sannidhanam temple in Kerala, India.

Key details of the system

  • Purpose: It regulates the flow of devotees, prevents massive overcrowding at Pamba and the Sannidhanam, and ensures a safer, more orderly darshan of Lord Ayyappa.
  • Free booking: The virtual queue slot booking is completely free of cost.
  • Daily caps: The system limits online slots (typically around 70,000 slots per day, with limited spot-booking alternatives available at designated centers). This number changes from year to year, and sometimes mid-season, depending on the rush.
  • Registration process: Pilgrims must register on the official portal using a valid mobile number or email address, upload required identity details/photos, and select a preferred date, time slot, and route.
  • Exemptions: Children under the age of 5 are exempt from the virtual queue requirement.
  • Verification: Upon booking, devotees receive a virtual queue coupon or QR code that must be verified along with original photo ID cards at designated police/board counters (such as at Pamba).

Documents to prepare before registering

Booking step 1

To book a Virtual Q slot, you first create an official pilgrim profile and then reserve your time slot. Make sure you have the following digital files saved on your computer or mobile device before opening the website:

  • Photograph: A clear, passport-size digital photo of each pilgrim (the allowed file size ranges from 30 KB to 1 MB depending on the upload field, so compress the photo for a smooth upload).
  • Identity proof: A government-issued photo ID (such as an Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, or Passport). School or college ID cards are acceptable for children between 5 and 18 years old.
  • Active contact info: A working mobile number and email address to receive One-Time Passwords (OTPs).

What happens if I don't get a Virtual Q slot?

If you travel to Sabarimala without a pre-booked Virtual Q ticket, you will still be allowed to have a darshan of Lord Ayyappa, but you will face significant administrative hurdles, very long wait times, and the risk of being turned away if crowd limits are reached.

The government and the Kerala High Court have put strict rules in place to manage the heavy rush, but there is one fallback for pilgrims who arrive without an online booking:

Spot booking counters

The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) operates official Spot Booking Centers at key transit hubs leading to the temple (such as Nilakkal and Vandiperiyar).

  • The process: You must physically queue up at these counters, present a valid government-issued photo ID (like your Aadhaar Card, Passport, or Voter ID), and have your information digitized.
  • The catch: These spot-booking slots are strictly capped and allocated dynamically based on cancellations. If the daily quota is already exhausted by the time you reach the counter, you will not receive a pass and could face major delays.

The risks of skipping the Virtual Q

If you choose to bypass the online system entirely, be prepared for the following consequences:

  • Extreme waiting times: Online Virtual Q ticket holders are funneled into a separate, faster-moving queue at the Pathinettampadi (18 Holy Steps). Non-ticket holders or those waiting for open slots face unpredictable, massive bottlenecks that can add many hours to the trek.
  • Sudden quota reductions: During peak season rush (like the Mandalam-Makaravilakku festival), the Kerala High Court frequently orders the TDB to drastically cut down or completely suspend spot bookings at standard locations like Pamba or Erumely to prevent stampedes. If you rely on spot booking during these times, you risk not being allowed past the transit camps.
  • Disrupted travel plans: The Kerala Police strictly enforce time slots. Arriving without a confirmed time means you may be forced to wait at the base camps (Nilakkal or Pamba) until a dynamic slot frees up, throwing off your entire travel, food, and lodging schedule.

We pray that Lord Ayyappa blesses every devotee with a safe, smooth and blissful Yatra.
