About House Bhajans
What is a house bhajan?
A house bhajan is an Ayyappa Puja and Bhajan held at a devotee's residence. Families and friends gather to sing bhajans, perform the puja, and conclude with Padi Paatu (the song of the 18 holy steps) and aarti.
What should be the main focus of the evening?
Devotion and the puja itself. The bhajan is a time to come together in prayer, not a social dinner. Please keep the emphasis on the singing, the rituals and Lord Ayyappa, rather than on food or elaborate arrangements.
Do I need to be an expert to host?
No. A sincere heart matters far more than perfection. Volunteers from the samaaj will guide the puja; the host's role is to prepare the space and the items listed below.
Do we need a priest?
Not necessarily. Samaaj volunteers can guide the puja. If you would like to invite one, look at it as an opportunity to encourage and support local priests or your family's house priest.
Preparing Your Home
When should I have everything ready?
Please prepare all puja items in advance on the day of the event, before devotees arrive. Last-minute shopping takes attention away from the puja.
How should I set up the puja space?
Choose a clean, quiet area with enough room for devotees to sit on the floor. Place the Ayyappa picture or idol on a raised, clean surface, with space in front for the Ganesha, lamps, and the padi (steps) arrangement.
What if I don't have a photo of Ayyappa?
Contact the Ayyappa Samaaj volunteers. They will give you a high-resolution image that you can print and mount in a frame.
How many people should I plan for?
Check with the samaaj coordinator for the expected number. Keep seating simple: floor mats or sheets work well.
Whom should I invite?
The invitation should be open to all deekshadharis. Beyond them, please invite people who are devoted and will take part in the puja and bhajans. A house bhajan is a prayer gathering, not a party, and the evening goes best when everyone joins in.
Do I need to decorate elaborately?
No. Fresh flowers and well-lit lamps are enough. Simplicity keeps the focus on devotion.
Puja Items Checklist
What items do I need to prepare?
Please have the following ready in advance. Tick each off as you gather it.
Why do we light the 18 step lamps?
Each of the 18 holy steps (padi) to Lord Ayyappa's sannidhanam is a deity. We sing Padi Paatu and light a lamp for each step to pay our respects to the sacred 18 steps and the deities of the 18 steps. Use one lamp per step, or two per step for 36.
What if I don't have an 18-step structure?
Ask the Ayyappa Samaaj or one of the devotees. They will lend you their steps.
Can I use LED tea lights instead of clay lamps?
Yes. LED tea lights are a safe, acceptable alternative, especially in homes with children or sensitive smoke alarms.
Why so much camphor?
The camphor flame should keep burning throughout Padi Paatu, so keep a full packet at hand.
Prasadam
What kind of prasadam should I prepare?
Sattvik prasadam only. Please do not use onion or garlic in anything offered or served. Simple, pure vegetarian preparations are ideal.
How elaborate should the prasadam be?
Keep it simple. The focus of the bhajan is devotion and the puja, not the prasadam items. One or two modest offerings are perfectly appropriate; a large spread is not expected.
What are good sattvik options?
- Paanagam (already on the puja list)
- Fresh fruits, especially bananas
- Sweet pongal or payasam
- Sundal (chickpea or other lentils)
- Curd rice or lemon rice, if serving a light meal
How do I make paanagam?
This makes about 10 small servings.
Ingredients
- 4 cups water
- 1 cup grated jaggery
- ½ tsp dry ginger powder (sukku)
- ¼ tsp cardamom powder
- Juice of 1 lemon
Method
- Dissolve the jaggery in the water, stirring well.
- Strain it through a fine sieve or cloth to remove any grit.
- Stir in the dry ginger and cardamom.
- Add the lemon juice and mix. Taste and adjust the jaggery or lemon.
- Make it fresh on the day and offer it at room temperature.
What should I avoid?
Onion, garlic, non-vegetarian items, eggs and alcohol. Avoid stale or leftover food; prasadam should be freshly prepared.
Can other devotees bring prasadam?
Yes, if coordinated with the host. The same sattvik, no onion/garlic guideline applies to everything brought.
During the Bhajan
What is the usual order of the evening?
Either of these two formats can be followed. Format 1 does the sahasranamam and ashtothram before the bhajans; Format 2 starts with the bhajans and does the ashtothram after the Ayyappa bhajans.

Should we do an ashtothram or a sahasranamam?
Either can be included. An ashtothram (108 names) takes about 5 minutes; a sahasranamam (1,000 names) takes about 30 minutes. Choose based on the time you have.
Should we include our family deity?
Yes. It is customary to also do the ashtothram of your kula deivam (family deity).
What should devotees wear?
Traditional or modest clothing is encouraged. Many devotees wear black, blue or saffron in keeping with Ayyappa tradition.
Any etiquette to keep in mind?
- Arrive on time and remove footwear before entering.
- Silence or set phones aside during the puja.
- Join in the singing; no prior experience is needed.
- Keep conversation for after the aarti.
Any safety tips?
Keep lamps and camphor away from curtains and children, have water nearby, and consider temporarily covering nearby smoke detectors only if safe and permitted.
Can I perform abhishekam at home?
Abhishekam is recommended only in temples. If you do perform it at home, use a vigraha that is 3 inches or less in size, preferably one you already have at home. Doing abhishekam with a vigraha brought from the temple is not recommended. If you wish to have an abhishekam done, please consider sponsoring one at the temple.
Do's and Don'ts
✔ Do
- Take a shower before the puja and wear clean clothes.
- Keep the focus on devotion, the bhajans and the puja.
- Keep all prasadam sattvik, with no onion or garlic.
- For an evening puja, prefer simple palagaram: idly or pongal with chutney and sambar, curd rice, and chakkarapongal.
✘ Don't
- Don't spend too much time on decorations.
- Don't treat it as a competition. It is not one.
- Don't make a large number of items. A few simple dishes are enough.
After the Bhajan
Should I clear the puja station after the bhajan?
No. Please leave the puja station as it is after the bhajan.
What do I do the day after?
- Perform an ashtothram (108 names) for the deity.
- Offer a fresh prasadam (sattvik, no onion or garlic).
- Do deeparadhana.
- Only then remove all the puja items.
What do I do with the items once removed?
Flowers and leftover offerings can be respectfully placed in a garden or plant soil. The turmeric Ganesha can be dissolved in water and poured into a plant. Coconuts and fruits are shared as prasadam.
What if I can't find a specific item?
Contact the samaaj coordinator before the event. Most items can be substituted or borrowed, so please don't let one missing item stop you from hosting.
How do I book a house puja and bhajan?
Send an email to the Puja and Bhajan coordinators to book a date.
